How Dental Insurance Works
When choosing your dental insurance plan, you agree to pay a monthly premium in exchange for coverage. Depending on whether it is only you or you and your family that is being covered, your premium may be around $50 or $150 – each plan is different.
By paying this monthly amount, you receive valuable benefits that look something like the following:
- 100% preventive services (i.e., dental checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
- 80% minor restorative services (i.e., dental fillings, root canal)
- 50% major restorative services (i.e., dental crowns, dentures)
It is unlikely that you will find a plan that covers cosmetic dentistry, as these services are commonly viewed as “elective” procedures and not necessary to maintain good oral health.
The Fee-for-Service Advantage
Effective January 1, 2026, Boyd & Walther Dental Associates will operate as a fee-for-service practice, meaning we will be out-of-network with all insurance providers. However, the great news is, you can still use your dental insurance! Being fee-for-service doesn't mean your insurance becomes worthless! Most dental insurance plans provide out-of-network benefits, and we're here to help you maximize those benefits.
Here's how we'll support you with insurance as a patient at our practice:
- File all your insurance claims - you'll never have to deal with paperwork
- Verify your out-of-network benefits before treatment so you know exactly what to expect
- Provide detailed treatment estimates showing your insurance portion and your responsibility
- Work with you on payment timing to help manage costs around your insurance reimbursements
